Compaction: how many passes is enough
The answer is not a number somebody tells you. It is a number you find on the first lift and then hold.
Ask how many passes a lift needs and someone will say four. Four is a guess wearing a uniform. The real answer depends on the material, the lift depth, the moisture, and the machine — and you can find it in one morning.
Compaction is about air, not weight
You are not squashing soil. You are driving air out from between the particles so they lock together. That is why a material that is too dry will not compact no matter how many times you roll it, and why one that is too wet cannot either — the water is in the way and water does not compress.
Moisture is the variable people ignore and it decides more than the roller does. There is a moisture content at which any given material compacts best. Too far either side and you are just making noise.
Lift depth beats pass count
A roller only influences so far down. Put material in too thick and the top gets tight while the bottom stays loose. You now have a lid on a soft layer, it will test fine at the surface, and it will fail later under load.
Thinner lifts, fewer passes each, is almost always faster than thick lifts and heroic rolling. That is the trade nobody makes on the first day and everybody makes by the third.
Find the number, then hold it
- Build a test stripSame material, same lift depth, same machine as the real work.
- Test after each passDensity after two, after three, after four, after five. Write it down — this is the whole exercise.
- Find where it stops improvingDensity climbs, then flattens. The pass where it flattens is your number. Everything past it is fuel.
- Watch for it going backwardsOver-rolling can break the structure back down, especially on granular material. More is not safer.
- Then hold the methodSame lift depth, same pass count, same overlap, every lift. Consistency is the deliverable.
The things that quietly change your number
- The weather. Yesterday's number was for yesterday's moisture.
- A change of material. A new load from a different pit is a new test strip.
- Overlap. Passes that do not overlap are not passes, they are stripes.
- Edges and corners. The roller cannot reach them, and that is where failures start. Plan for a plate or a rammer.
The honest bit
Compaction is the cheapest work on site to do properly and the most expensive to redo. Nothing that goes on top of it is cheaper than it is. Tell us the material and the lift and we will point at the machine.
