Hours or years: which one is the machine's real age
Neither, on its own. The useful number is what the hours were spent doing.
Two machines, same model. One is a 2018 with 9,000 hours. One is a 2022 with 9,000 hours. Which is the better buy? Most people answer instantly, and the honest answer is that you do not have enough information yet.
What years tell you
Age tells you about the build, the emissions tier, the electronics, and the parts availability. It also tells you about rubber and rust, both of which age on the calendar whether the machine works or not. A low-hour machine that sat outside for six years is not a low-wear machine.
What hours tell you
Hours tell you about the engine and the drivetrain. They are the closest thing to a mileage figure, and they are the number that most directly predicts the next big service.
What hours do not tell you is what the machine was doing during them, and that is the whole game.
The number behind the number
An hour loading shot rock is not an hour idling at a gate. An hour of production loading is not an hour of finish grading. The meter counts them identically.
- Idle hours inflate the meter without wearing much except the engine. A machine with high idle time may be younger than it reads.
- Load-and-carry cycles wear a machine hard: the drivetrain, the linkage, the tyres, all at once.
- Rock and abrasives destroy GET and cylinders on a schedule that has nothing to do with the meter.
- Cold starts, done badly, do more damage than hours of proper work.
What to ask instead
- What did it do?Application first. "Aggregate yard" and "site prep" are different machines at the same hours.
- Who serviced it, and is it written down?A record beats a reassurance. A machine with a boring service history is a good machine.
- What has been replaced, and when?Not a red flag. A machine at high hours with nothing replaced is the red flag.
- What are the big-ticket items at this hour count?Every model has them. Knowing when they land is how you price the machine honestly.
The rule of thumb we actually use
Buy the history, not the number. A well-serviced high-hour machine that did easy work will usually outlast a neglected low-hour one that did not. The meter is where the conversation starts.
We list hours on every unit in our yard that has them. Ask for the condition notes and the plate photo — both come without a fuss.
